RELIGION CANNOT MAKE YOU A GOOD PERSON
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
They were a sect synonymous with extreme devotion to Moses' laws and commitment to leading an isolated life. There name meant 'to be separate ' They were descendants of Jewish returnees from the Babylonian captivity, and were influenced by pagan Babylonian religious customs. The sect was set up to give the Jewish state an identity and cultural orientation that was patterned after the laws of Moses .
They were patriots and religious zealots. However, over time the Pharisees deviated from the Mosaic law replacing it with their own interpretations of the law ; claiming it was God-inspired and equivalent to Moses' laws . They where characterized by hypocrisy, deceit , avarice and self-righteousness. They persecuted Jesus and His followers and received Jesus's rebukes publicly.
Many people today like the Pharisees, are ignorant of achieving right standing (righteousness) with God by the simple act of accepting His forgiveness by grace through faith in Jesus and are trying to earn salvation by their own efforts. This is contrary to the scriptures and logic. Heb 10:1-4TLB says "The sacrifices under the old system were repeated again and again, year after year, but even so they could never save those who lived under their rules. If they could have, one offering would have been enough; the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all and their feeling of guilt would be gone. But just the opposite happened: those yearly sacrifices reminded them of their disobedience and guilt instead of relieving their minds. For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats really to take away sins." Religion cannot bring out the love nature of a person but guilt , bitterness against one's neighbour, worry and fear; only a relationship with God through Christ can. Religious devotion should never be a factor in choosing a marriage partner but love and respect for others. A religious person has no genuine respect for family members and spiritual authority ,they are arrogant and selfish.
We cannot fulfill God's commands (Gal2:16, Rom. 3:23) only Jesus can (Heb. 4:15). Therefore, to be righteous, we must put our faith in His promise to save us by His work on the cross. Prayer : Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive grace and freedom from spiritual bondage and guilt in Jesus name.
