PARENTS DUTIES TOWARDS THEIR CHILDREN

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

"He must manage his own family well, having children who respect and obey him."1 Timothy 3:4 NLT

The process of raising children requires recognition of the fact that the dreams and aspirations of a nation resides in every child . We should bear in mind that the future is in our hands to either make or break .

Adults bare on their bodies and psyche the signature of their parents or guardians. The outcome of a child's upbringing is inevitable , whatever we sow we shall reap .

Personalities are made out of the imputes from the family , community , religion , security agencies , media , schools attended and government. The state of these elements of mind moulding are registered in a person's subconscious and manifests in all that a person does. Your attitude and character is the output of a learned behaviour knowingly or unknowingly.

For instant, Nigerians had suffered military rule for over thirty years and this implants the dominion mentality in an individual. The average Nigerian is driven by a control mentality as a result of this they find  it hard to serve for long in a job or ministry. The 'Dominion mentality' destroys  work culture. This is the reason behind the shortcut to success syndrome .

Life is progressive and goes through phases. Every phase is important in other to understand the next phase. It involves observing  precepts progressively and skipping any one of them is injurious to the society. They are contained in God's word . Parents should teach children God's word , every family must  be involved in home bible studies and prayers . This is how order and a godly character is built in a family ( Deut6:7, Deut. 31:12,13, Prov22:6a, Ps78:5) .Teaching should be done in love. Eph 6:4,Col3:21) while avoiding the misguided teachings of 'permissiveness' where children rule over parents and proudly ridicule the holy scriptures (.Isa3:4-5)

Teaching requires chastisement whenever necessary  , the Bible says "Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them."Proverbs 13:24 NLT Failure to discipline a child produces presumptuous, unstable , weak-willed and bitter adults.  This is a major reason for marital crisis and failure in business. The rod instils endurance and humility  in a child needed to build a strong marriage or business

The rod in Prov13:24  is symbolic of  divine authority  ( Psalm23:4) the Shepherd's rod leads the sheep to provisions and makes them wise. Parents who were not disciplined as children are full of bitterness and most likely to produce permissive children with no regards for constituted authority. This is a major reason for business and health failure and poverty among God's people .

Fathers are symbols of authority and should govern their children with authority lovingly (1Tim 3:4, 12b) they should also provide for their needs ( 2Cor.12;14, 1 Tim 5:8) in doing this they should not be partial .  (1Tim5:21)

Children need a listening ear by God fearing parents or guardians  to avoid abuse .

Prayer : Heavenly father forgive  me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and  was raised again  for my salvation I receive as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Ghost and power to be a godly role model in Jesus name.
