OF WHAT VALUE IS CIRCUMCISION?

 By Rev. Michael Benson Ajayi

"But you work on the Sabbath, too, when you obey Moses’ law of circumcision. (Actually, this tradition of circumcision began with the patriarchs, long before the law of Moses.)"John 7:22 NLT Bible

The covenant between God and Abraham was sealed with blood through circumcision . This happened 430 years before the law of Moses. As a sign of God's covenant with the Jews  , it became a sign to identify the Jews as God's special people based on his promise to Abraham .

The power in the circumcision was in the understanding that it was a proof that the circumcised was devoted to obeying God's commandments. But unfortunately, none of the followers of the law could be justified through the observance of the law as in John 7:22 . Failure  in one aspect of the law meant failure in all aspects of it.

The scriptures say "Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.” Galatians 2:16 NLTBible.

Given this circumstance, the question of the validity or relevance of circumcision begs for answers . " The Jewish ceremony of circumcision has value only if you obey God’s law. But if you don’t obey God’s law, you are no better off than an uncircumcised Gentile."Romans 2:25 NLT Bible

"Then what’s the advantage of being a Jew? Is there any value in the ceremony of circumcision?"  Romans 3:1 NLT Bible . First ,the Jews are God's covenant children be virtue that they are descendants of Abraham and custodians of the historic evidence and proof of our faith .This does not mean that all unfaithful Jews are justified and that circumcision which was more of a sign that affect the body more than the heart of the unfaithful was a substitute for an obedient heart.

No. The mark of circumcision was an acknowledgement that they agreed they were under the laws of Moses. Humanity was brought under the laws of Moses along with the unfaithful Jews. An unfaithful Jew was in the same status as the non Jew -Gentiles . As a matter of equity ,the gentile who does the requirements of the law without knowing the law is considers just before God. Abraham did not know the laws of Moses but he was considered righteous before God.

Circumcision serves as a reminder of our indebtedness to God under the law the scriptures say  "Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God."Romans 3:19 NLT Bible.  The circumcised is as guilty as the uncircumcised before God. "Can we boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No, because our acquittal is not based on obeying the law. It is based on faith. So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law." Romans 3:27‭-‬28 NLT Bible.  Our justification before God is not based on the observance of any religious  duty . "We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are'. Romans 3:22 NLT Therefore,  "For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus."Galatians 3:26‭, ‬28 NLT Bible

Prayer : Heavenly father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as Lord and saviour and receive the Holy Ghost and power to possess what is rightfully mine in God's kingdom in Jesus name.
