BREAKING LEADERSHIP INDUCED CURSES

By Rev. Michael Benson Ajayi

Judges 9 :9" But the olive tree  said unto them, Should I leave my  fatness, wherewith by me they honour  God and man, and go to be promoted  over the trees? 10 And the trees said to  the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over  us. 11 But the fig tree said unto them,  Should I forsake my sweetness, and  my good fruit, and go to be promoted  over the trees? 12 Then said the trees  unto the vine, Come thou, and reign  over us. 13 And the vine said unto  them, Should I leave my wine, which  cheereth God and man, and go to be  promoted over the trees? 14 Then said  all the trees unto the bramble, Come  thou, and reign over us.  15 And the  bramble said unto the trees, If in truth  ye anoint me king over you, then come  and put your trust in my shadow: and  if not, let fire come out of the bramble,  and devour the cedars of Lebanon."

After the death of Gideon it was expected that his successor would come from one of his sons according to tradition to ensure continuity in the pursuit of the spiritual reforms after the Israelites had turned their backs on the Lord with disastrous consequences. Instead of a successor from one of his sons the elders chose Abimelech, he was born out of wedlock and his mother was of the same tribe as the elders (Judges 9:2-3) .In other to pave way for his ascension to the throne He killed the seventy legitimate sons  of his father with the exception of Jothan who hid himself .

In the above parable Jotham spoke on the negative effects of nepotism. Nepotism is when we favour a person because he is a member of our social group ( tribe, religion , political party etc) . In most cases such persons may be charismatic but lack the qualities of good leadership.

They are referred to as brambles ( a prickly scrambling shrub of the rose family) Jotham placed a curse saying  Abimelech's reign shall bring about untold hardship to the elders eventually leading to their mutual destruction .God's judgment was executed against Abimelech and the elders " Thus God rendered the wickedness of  Abimelech, which he did unto his  father, in slaying his seventy brethren:   And all the evil of the men of  Shechem did God render upon their  heads: and upon them came the curse  of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal."  Nepotism brings about curses upon communities. God does not overlook oppression and injustice.

A curse carries with it disastrous consequences. An example of this in the new testament is the case of the man engaged in sexual perversion with his father's wife (1Cor.5:1-5) secondly, the evil conspiracy by Ananias and his wife Sapphira against apostle Peter ( Acts 5;1- 10). A curse comes with a divine backing .

Some communities bring calamity upon themselves by their choice of leadership and until the aggrieved persons are appeased progress and peace will be farfetched (James 5:16).

The bible gives a guide on how to chose a leader " select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility. " Acts 6:3

Prayers: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I  receive him as lord and saviour and ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit and power to live integrity. Amen
