SUBMITTING TO THE RULING AUTHORITY
By Rev .Michael Benson Ajayi
Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you." Romans 13:1-3 NLT
The scriptures confirm that power for leadership comes from God. God puts people in power so that his people will prosper and his righteous will done on earth. Good governance results in the rapid spread of the gospel while bad governance results in increase in backsliding and sin in society (psalm 125:3)
It is against this backdrop that Christians are expected to be very active in the electoral processes wherever they are . This is to ensure that only persons with integrity, a commitment to service , competence and a passion for people are appointed to places of leadership.
It is important to know that it is not every government that God's people are expected to submit to , if that was not the case then the Israelites should not have sought for deliverance from Pharaoh , likewise , Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego ( Daniel 3) should not have resisted the commandment by the Babylonian king to bow to his idol for that would have been against God's will if we were to submit to all governments. Romans 13 is referring to a righteous government , verse 3 says they are to enforce righteous governance. That can only be possible through righteous leaders .
Its not every political power that is of God. The Bible says ":Can unjust leaders claim that God is on their side— leaders whose decrees permit injustice? They gang up against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. But the Lord is my fortress; my God is the mighty rock where I hide. God will turn the sins of evil people back on them. He will destroy them for their sins. The Lord our God will destroy them ." Psalms 94:20-23 NLT Bible
Under such a circumstance God's people should pray and seek for divine deliverance . The psalmist king David while being oppressed by king Saul prayed a prayer in psalm 140 which is still valid till date ,verse 8 says
"Lord, do not let evil people have their way. Do not let their evil schemes succeed, or they will become proud. "Psalms 140:8 NLT
Righteous governance following the rule of law is the only cure to the insecurity and poverty problem in Nigeria. The Holy Spirit speaking through prophet Isaiah said " Look, a righteous king is coming! And honest princes will rule under him. And this righteousness will bring peace. Yes, it will bring quietness and confidence forever. My people will live in safety, quietly at home. They will be at rest." Isaiah 32:1, 17-18 NLT Bible
Prayer: Heavenly Father forgive me of my aims against you i believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power for breakthrough
