DO NOT SUCCUMB TO THE FEAR OF FAILURE
By
Rev. Michael Benson Ajayi
Matt
17:19-21 NKJV “Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why
could we not cast it out?" So Jesus said to them, "Because of your
unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you
will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and
nothing will be impossible for you.”
Note, Jesus did not attribute the
disciples’ failure to ancestral curses or witches or wizards, as is often said
by many churches; none of these have the capacity to stop a miracle from taking
place in Christ (Luke10:19) if we believe. At the name of Jesus every knee must
bow.
The fear of failure is an overwhelming concern about the inability to successfully
accomplish an endeavor or project. It is the result of pride caused by an addiction to
public validation and approval .Proverbs 11:2 NKJV says “When
pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom.” Whenever we
allow the public determine our self worth, prides and an overwhelming fear of embarrassment takes overt; we wouldn’t be afraid of failure if
there was nobody we were comparing ourselves with..
The word of God gives us a picture
of our true worth in 1 Peter 2:9 ..”You are royal priests, a holy nation, God's
very own possession.” We are royalty and not commoners regardless of our circumstances. The
richest sinner by the world’s standard is poor in God’s eyes. They are described in Rev 3:17 TLB "You say, 'I am
rich, with everything I want; I don't need a thing!' And you don't realize that
spiritually you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.” There
is a void and an overwhelming sense of vulnerability in their hearts that only
the word of God can cure: no amount of charity work, sex, drugs, partying and
yoga can fill that void. Man is spirit and needs more than physical and
emotional foods for sustenance (Matt4:4)
The fear of
failure is caused by the lack of faith in God’s word. People now spend lesser time in studying God’s word. Faith comes from constantly meditating on God’s word
(Rom10:17). It is food to the human spirit,we must
feed our spirits the same way we eat food in other to overcome fear. Fear is
the result of spiritual starvation. The feeling that one needs to be prayed for
by a more powerful man of God is in itself an indication of the presence of
fear: in reality there is no such thing as a more powerful man of God. It is
the same Holy Spirit working through everyone and in you too; scripture says in
1 Cor 12:4 KJV. “Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.”.
Even if Jesus was to personally pray for such a person, the absence of God’s
word in the heart results in unbelief and serves as a hindrance to
breakthroughs; this was what happened when Jesus prayed for some persons in the
village where He was raised (Matt13:58).
When we put more confidence in our academic qualifications, physical attributes and proficiency in our job or business instead of on God’s word, failure becomes inevitable. Personal achievements can’t guarantee one’s security against terrorism, emotional, economic and political instability (1Sam2:9). We must always see God as our ONLY source of help and our confidence should stem from His trustworthiness, He said in Isa 41:10 “Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” Amen.
