WHAT ABOUT THE UNFORGIVABLE SIN?
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi.
Your Faith Shall Not Fail
Matthew 10:33, "But
whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which
is in heaven.” The word ‘deny’ is a Greek word ‘arneomai’ which means to contradict, i.e. disavow, reject,
abnegate, refuse.
Our loyalty and reliability to the lord will be tested at
one time or the other
through very precarious conditions that would require
making a choice between Christ and self. It is part of our growth process and failing a test doesn’t mean that we would be rejected by God . If that was
the case, Peter who was appointed the first general superintendent of the
church wouldn’t have been
forgiven after he had denied Jesus three times in a row (John18:25-27). Jesus
had foretold the event a few days before it occurred and prayed that the enemy’s plan to remove Peter from the fold
wouldn’t succeed.
The scriptures says in Luke
22:31-32 NKJV “And the Lord said, "Simon,
Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you; that your faith should not fail; ..." If failing a test automatically meant rejection then Jesus’ prayer for Peter is contradictory
to God’s will of denying
us before His angels. But Christ isn’t contradictory which means there must be some other details
about the magnitude or dimension of the sin of denial and its impact on the
human spirit.
The denial that God speaks
of is a total heartfelt denial, the scriptures speaks of this being possibility
in Matt 15:8 NKJV "These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And
honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.” The reverse of this could be that
with their mouth they deny me but with their hearts they honour me. This
happens to every Christian especially during our childhood stage of
spirituality; this occurs when under the overwhelming fear of what people will
say about our faith in the lord, we tend to downgrade our relationship to Him
but yet in our hearts we feel terribly sorry about our betrayal. Peter was
under extreme fear when he denied Christ but His heart was for Christ (Matt
16:17) . God who looks at the heart (1sam 16:7) saw how remorseful Peter was
and therefore gave him a second chance, if He did it for Peter, He will also do
same for any believer that has fallen short.
This isn’t the case of the unforgivable sin in
Matt 12:32 NKJV “Anyone who speaks a word against the
Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy
Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.” Jesus clearly says here that the
sin of speaking against Him or denying Him is forgivable. He will not reject
you even if you deny Him because He knows the state of our hearts. The
unforgivable sin is a conscious calculated and direct confrontation against the
Holy Ghost (Heb 6:4-6). This is impossible for a Christian to commit because it
will require denying the reality of God’s existence after partaking of the fullness of God’s power. This was what Satan did
against God and will not receive any pardon from Him. As you read this now,
receive freedom from condemnation and guilt and increase in faith for exploits
in Jesus name.
