LIVING TO PLEASE GOD
By Rev. Michael Benson Ajayi
John 8:56 "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad."
Prophet Abraham was privileged to have received the revelation of the day when man shall be justified by faith and not by the works of self-effort (Rom. 4:13), and he believed it and was himself justified by faith (Rom. 4:3-4, 9).He was ecstatic by the good news. Hebrews 11:6 says, "But without faith it is impossible to please him." It was Abraham's faith that pleased God. Faith is the total reliance on God for existence; it is like being in an airplane 40.000 feet above sea level ; at that point , your safety is in the hands of the pilot till the plane arrives its destination, likewise is our faith.
The Lord promised Abraham that his seed would be as numerous as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore and Abraham believed God. That pleased Him so much that he counted Abraham righteous from that moment , even though Abraham had not yet fulfilled the rite of circumcision and was yet living a holy life as there was no law nor religion.Abraham was neither a Muslim or Christian and there was no Quran, bible or Torah then. He had the only qualification for salvation : faith in God.
Sarah, Abraham's wife, was his half sister (Gen. 20:12) This was an abomination according to the law (Leviticus18.9, 26). Therefore, Abraham's marriage to Sarah was not what pleased God. Abraham had already lied about Sarah not being his wife so that he could save his neck from the enemy. He was willing to let a man commit adultery with his wife with no objections from him. Immediately after this event did the Lord count Abraham's faith for righteousness (Gen. 15:6). Abraham tried to accomplish God's will in the flesh with Hagar (Gen. 16) and then repeated the terrible sin of denying that Sarah was his wife again (Gen. 20)..
A study of Abraham's life and the favour that he found with God is proof that it was Abraham's faith that pleased God. It's the same with any of us. The only thing that we can do to please God is put our faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior.
Prayer : Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you, I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive grace to walk in overflowing favour as I embrace the life of faith in your mercy towards me in Jesus name.
