GENERATIONAL CURSES DO NOT EXIST
Rev.Michael Benson Ajayi
2kings 14:5-6 "And it came to pass, as soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand, that he slew his servants which had slain the king his father. But the children of the murderers he slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, wherein the Lord commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin."
The teaching on generational curses has generated much debate among biblical scholars and non-Christians too. The teaching is derived from Exodus 34:7 "Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. " let's take a look at this scripture using the syntactical analytical method of the interpretation of scriptures . This method seeks to know the context within which a statement is made and how it affects present day realities.
The context of this verse of scriptures is the magnanimous nature of God’s mercy and how it affects thousands in a given family. In the light of this, the word visiting is the Hebrew word 'Paquad' which means to care for, bestow, oversee, deposit. There are two words that were added by the translators of the bible from Hebrew to English and they are distinguished from the original text by being italicized, they are 'generation' and 'the guilty' . Therefore, the verse of scripture without these additions from the translators reads "Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means ; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth . " What this means is that the effect of the parents sins could be felt by their children . For example a pregnant drug addict could destroy the unborn child by giving birth to a drug addict who will eventually introduce his or her children into doing drugs. The same with a family whose parents where promiscuous, they could suffer from terrible diseases that could be transmitted from mother to child.
Under the dispensation of the law from which that scripture was derived, there was no forgiveness of sin that's what the scriptures means by the clause 'no means clear' , and the consequences of sin was death. Sin is not transferable from parents to children ,the scriptures says in Ezekiel 18: 20 "The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. " By reason of God’s mercy the consequences of the sins of the parents which could affect the children could be cured. God made provisions for the children of rebellious parents to enjoy the benefits of the blessed life regardless of the sins of the parents , an example is the case in 2Kings 14:5-6 . Amaziah lost his father Joash through a palace coup in 2Kings 12:20. When he assumed the throne as king he set out on a revenge mission by executing the coup plotters but spared their family. This was God's grace in effect in the old testament era.
Under the dispensation of grace which we live in, all sins are forgiven , unlike in the old testament were sins could not be cleared. Through Jesus Christ we have redemption of our sins, which means Jesus bought our sins and those of our great grand parents up to Adam with His blood and took our place of punishment on the cross. The scriptures says in Ephesians 1:7" In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;" he took every curse upon himself including future curses and has been made our curse- breaker or neutralizer as the scriptures says in Galatians 3: 13 "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: " therefore, there are no impediments to the fulfillment of your destiny .
As you receive this now I declare the overturning of every evil prophesy over your life and family in Jesus name.
