WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ARE DESPERATE AND DON’T KNOW WHAT THE WILL OF GOD IS
By Michael Benson Ajayi
Isa 30:20-21 NKJV “Yet your teachers will not be moved into a corner
anymore, But your eyes shall see your teachers. Your ears shall hear a word
behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it," Whenever you turn
to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left. “
There are moments when the pressures of
life could be overwhelming and as a result our devotion to worship could be
compromised. Desperation is part of the Christian growth process and shouldn’t be seen as abnormal.
In Matthew 12:1-8 Jesus led His
hungry disciples through a corn field while on a mission trip. They helped
themselves to a meal of fresh corn while passing through the field. The law of
Moses for such to cater for the poor in (Deut 25:23) ; under such desperate
conditions they were allowed to eat as much as they could from the farm produce
without taking anything away from the farm. In another scenario, King David and
his men approached Ahimelech the high priest after going for days without food
while fleeing from his enemies. The only available food was the sacred bread
which was strictly for (Lev 24:9, 1 Samuel21:1-6) the high priest and not to be
eaten by anyone else. He and his followers ate the sacred meal and where saved
from starving to death. In a bid to obey one aspect of the law the priests
ended up violating another aspect, for example, the Sabbath day was a day when
no physical work was allowed yet the law demanded that daily burnt offerings be
made on behalf of the Israelites, this put the priests in a dicey situation
where whatever action that was taken was a violation of the written code, yet
in this case they were guiltless (Numbers 28:9-10).
When the disciples were accused by
the Pharisees for violating the law of the Sabbath, Jesus answered saying
in Matt 12:7 AMP “I desire mercy [readiness to help,
to spare, to forgive] rather than sacrifice and sacrificial victims, you would
not have condemned the guiltless.” [Hos 6:6; Matt 9:13.] .Though they were in clear
violation of the written code, the purpose and intent was for the fulfillment
of the will of God therefore they were declared guiltless. It is like
reprimanding an ambulance driver for breaking the law while driving a VIP
patient requiring urgent medical attention to the hospital at 100 mph in a 60
mph zone.
We
must recognize that we are under the dispensation of grace where God allows us to
choose within the perimeter of His overall will and plans for us. In 1
Samuel 10:1-7 , King Saul was told to use his discretion while under the influence of the spirit of
God while administering the office of the king. The same applies in the choice
of a marriage partner , haven known a person for a long time there isn’t anything wrong getting married to
that person, you don’t need a special
revelation from God concerning the person (1Cor:7:36) . Likewise, if one is disposed to attend a
dinner party by a non Christian, there’s absolutely nothing wrong as long as it doesn’t violate your conscience and
requires rejecting your faith in the lord. ( 1cor 10.27) as long as you are
sure of your conviction you are free to attend(Rom.14:22b).
A cardinal principle in decision
making when under a desperate situation is to be guided by love and how your
actions impacts on others especially the church of Christ ( 1 cor 8:9,13Rom
14:15). The refusal to put this in perspective often leads to the concealing of
the will of God from such a recalcitrant Christian. When a Christian chooses to
neglect the church of Christ in order to appeal to the world system, such a
person becomes a stranger to God’s plans ( Luke 10:21). When King Saul rebelled against
God and prayed, his prayers were not answered. The will of God is strange to
those who have turned their backs on the teaching of the truth of God’s word while in pursuit of
miraculous signs and wonders.( 2Thes2:10 -12) . We must depend on God to lead
us ( Jer.10:23) regardless of how discouraged we may be Psalm142:3. He promises
to tell us exactly what steps to take (ps32:8) . His angels are assigned to
guide us ( Exo.23:20,Exo32:34) ,just as
in Gen 24:7 where the lord’s angel
directed Isaac to his desired
wife. As you read this receive grace for divine leading in Jesus name.
