DEVELOPING A HEART THAT IS SENSITIVE TO GOD'S SPIRIT
Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Matt 16:4 NKJV “A wicked and adulterous
generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign
of the prophet Jonah." And He left them and departed”
In Matt 12:38
NKJV “Then some of the scribes and
Pharisees answered, saying, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from
You." The religious and legalistic Jews sought a sign from Jesus Christ as
a proof of His divinity. As simple as this may seem to the lay person,
a critical look will reveal how sinister these individuals where. They are the kind
of persons who discourage people from attending to the study and teaching of
sound doctrines. So many preachers have fallen prey to these ungodly fellows and
as a result churches have been turned to amphi theaters for the display of all
manner of theatrics in a bid to satisfy these egoists thus giving Satan the advantage.
Let’s take a
logical look at what these religious Jews were offering Jesus Christ
through their requests for signs and wonders. ” The fallacy of Denying the
Antecedent always occurs when we want to limit our investigations within known
boundaries. The following is an example of denying the antecedent. It follows
this order of reasoning:
1. If Jesus were to perform a miracle in front of us right
now, then that would prove He is the messiah.
2. Jesus is not performing a miracle in front of me right
now.
3. Therefore, Jesus isn’t the Messiah. This denies the antecedent. God is under no
obligation to perform a miracle at the whim of one of His creations. Nor is it
likely that the Pharisees and Sadducees would accept a given miracle as legitimate
anyway—preferring to trust that future studies will reveal that the event is
explainable by natural law.
Therefore the request by these Pharisees was a religious trap.
A lot of preachers have fallen into this trap and lost the sense of direction in the
pursuit of faith. They no longer spend time to study the word; they downplay the
place of faith in the salvation of a person replacing it with miraculous
evidence. Faith is logical while
miracles defy human logic, thus seeking to build one’s faith through miracles
will only lead to disastrous consequences prominent among which is a hard
heart. A hard heart keeps us from perceiving and receiving spiritual truths as
revealed in the gospel. This is why lives aren’t being transformed by the power
in the spoken word because they cannot relate to what is being taught from
scriptures. Hard-hearted individuals find
it hard to testify to the efficacy of the gospel . The word of God
doesn’t just make sense to such persons.
Satan finds such persons very useful in the pursuance of His course on earth. He
has blinded their eyes (2 Cor 4:4) thus
they are oblivious of the consequences of their actions. Such persons are hard
to love and difficult to please. The scriptures in (Heb 3;12-13)describes
a hard heart as an evil heart and
it is as a result of a gradual loss of
interest in the reading and meditating on the word of God(1john2:14).
Scriptures says in (Ezekiel 36;26) that God will remove the heart of
stone and
give us a sensitive heart that will be responsive to the voice of the
Holy Spirit. Receive grace for spiritual sensitivity as you read this
now in Jesus name. .
