THIS IS HOW TO DEVELOP AN INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
Rev. Michael Benson Ajayi
Ps 37:4 NKJV “Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give
you the desires of your heart.”
The word ‘delight’ as used here is the Hebrew word ‘anag ‘which means to be soft or pliable, figuratively it
means to be effeminate or luxurious. It is like the interaction between a woman
and a man in love with each other. An example of this in scripture is what
transpired between Jesus Christ and the woman with the precious perfume in Matt
26:7-8 NKJV “a woman came to Him having an
alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as
He sat at the table.” This was a
luxurious experience for the lord; a Nazarene. Culture did not allow comb or razor to come near the hair of a
Nazarene as a sign devotion to God (Number 6:5.) Therefore, having precious oil
being poured on His hair locks was a beautiful experience considering the hot
climate of the Middle East.
She did not stop at that, the scripture
says in Luke 7:38-39 NKJV …. “she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped
them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with
the fragrant oil.” At the end Jesus
Christ forgave her sins and commended the woman for showing Him so much love
(luke7:47) and rebuked the religious folks for not showing Him such love.
Religion makes a person very emotionally insensitive. Jesus opposes any form
of religion because of their horrible misrepresentation of the love of God and
the damage this causes to humanity (Matthew23).
God desires to have an intimate
relationship with us .Religious legalism creates a false image of God as a
vindictive overlord who delights in punishing those who violate His laws thus perpetually
placing us in a position of always
begging for His mercy and pleading for His help as though He has no desire to
help us. This is completely contrary to what the scriptures says about Him. He
loves us dearly and unconditionally and does not delight in our damnation
(John3:16-17) . He sent Jesus Christ to pay the price for our sins once and for
all so that we may be united with Him like a bride unites with the groom in a marriage
(Eph5:25-26). It is His good pleasure to have us adopted as beloved heirs of
His kingdom (Eph1:5).
God’s relationship with Jesus Christ is a model of the
kind of intimacy He wishes to share with us. The born again experience goes beyond
the forgiveness of our sins: it includes sharing eternal life with God. This
life is defined by the word of God as knowing God the Father and Jesus Christ
(1John5:20). Eternal life is having an intimate, personal relationship with God
the Father and Jesus the Son and this is consummated through the Holy Spirit.
Sin was the barrier that stood between us and
the father and through the blood of Jesus Christ eternal forgiveness was
purchased for humanity. We have been reconciled back to God through Jesus
Christ (2Cor5:18). In Christ, God no longer regards us as sinners or enemies,
He no longer imputes sins against us, and we are eternally free from the fear
of Judgment and condemnation. We are no longer strangers to the household of God,
the scripture says in Eph 2:19-20 NKJV” Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and
foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of
God,” God is our
heavenly father and loves us better than the best earthly father can and He
desires we approach Him boldly to find grace
in the time of need for He has not given us the spirit of fear (2Tim1:7).
As you read this now, may the evil spirit of fear and rejection be swallowed up
by the love of and for God; and receive faith for great exploits in Jesus name.
