SUPERSTITION HINDERS BREAKTHROUGHS

Acts 17:22 KJV “Then
Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive
that in all things ye are too superstitious.”
The word
‘superstition’ as used here is a Greek word which derives its meaning from two
other words: the first ‘deilos’ which means' to dread', be timid, faithless and
fearful. The second is the word ‘Daimon’ which means a supernatural spirit of a
bad nature:the devil. Superstition is the fear of evil spirits. In Acts 17:23
the scriptures says it is an attribute of persons without a one-of-a-kind
relationship with God .It is like being married to a total stranger.
A gap in any
relationship creates suspicion. The lack of a one -of-a-kind personal
relationship with God elicits fear and it determines how we relate to our
neighbours. Superstitious folks are suspicious of everyone (Prov 17:20) and
prone to the Post Hoc fallacy also known as confusing coincidental
relationships with causes.
This fallacy is
committed when it is concluded that one event causes another simply because the
proposed cause occurred before the proposed effect. For example, a man dreamed
of a snake on a tree and became ill the next day. He concluded that seeing a
snake in a dream results in sicknesses. But that’s not the truth. The Israelites
were revived by looking at the image of a snake(Num 21:8) and the Lord said we
should be wise as a serpent . Snakes have their useful purpose in creation .
This is an example of the effect of the post hoc fallacy on society.
Superstition is the enemy of scientific discoveries; it negates research into
better ways of living. Jesus opposed the religious Jews for replacing the word
of God with superstition ( Mark 7:13)
Superstition is
often disguised as prophesies by fortune-tellers, this limits how God answers a
person’s prayers (1Kings22:4-37) and has led to the destruction of many lives.
The tradition of men hinders genuine faith in God; they have no scriptural and
logical foundation and thus lack the capacity to change lives (Col 2:19-23)
that’s why despite the proliferation of these 'prophets' (fortune tellers),
society is no better off. The gospel is a life changer.
When we seek God
with all our hearts, He reveals Himself to us ( Jer29:13)and those who know Him
shall be strong (courageous, fortified) and shall be accomplished (Dan11:32) .
Apostle Paul wrote over 50% of the New Testament scriptures and worked great
miracles and yet yearned to know God the more (Phil 3:10). The word ‘know’ is
the Greek word ‘ginosko’ which means to-
allow, be aware of, feel, perceive, be sure of, understand. God reveals Himself
to us through the bible therefore, nothing should replace a daily meditation on
His word ,
As you read this now may the consciousness of God overshadow
you in Jesus name .
