UNDERSTANDING OPENS THE DOORS TO BREAKTHROUGHS

Rev. Michael Benson Ajayi

Psalm 119:125 " I am your servant; give me understanding, that I may know your testimonies."

Psalm 119:130 "The entrance of your words gives light; it gives understanding unto the simple"

The word 'understanding' means: the ability to understand something; comprehension. The bible contains data about God's relationships with humanity spanning thousands of years .

In other to understand the bible one must be guided by the fundamental principles of questioning . We must ask WHAT the subject of the given text is ? WHO is the text of  scripture referring to ? WHY is the text scripture written the way it is ? WHEN was the scripture written and the prevailing  culture and what is its validity and applicability  . HOW was it applied then and how should it be applied now considering the prevailing circumstances .

Asking these questions opens the door to understanding . Scriptures should be read without prejudice and  viewed from the perspective of all human belief system , meaning you should be familiar with other belief system such as atheism ( non belief in God) , Theism ( belief in God) Polytheism ( belief in several gods) agnosticism ( belief in God but without proof and commitment ) humanism ( system of thought attaching prime importance to human rather than divine or supernatural matters ) God wants us to reason with him (Isaiah 1:18)  We should question everything.

Understanding comes from questioning everything and searching the Scriptures using the relevant tools especially the English , Greek Aramaic and Hebrew dictionaries given that the original texts were not written in English .

Without these tools, the Bible sounds foolish and contradictory  . The students of scriptures sounds foolish to the worldly thus , the need to teach . The Bible says " also speak of these things, not in words taught or supplied by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining and interpreting spiritual thoughts with spiritual words [for those being guided by the Holy Spirit].  But the natural [unbelieving] man does not accept the things [the teachings and revelations] of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness [absurd and illogical] to him; and he is incapable of understanding them, because they are spiritually discerned and appreciated, [and he is unqualified to judge spiritual matters]. But the spiritual man [the spiritually mature Christian] judges all things [questions, examines and applies what the Holy Spirit reveals], yet is himself judged by no one [the unbeliever cannot judge and understand the believer’s spiritual nature].1 Corinthians 2:13‭-‬15 AMP Bible

While making your research , trust the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to the truth of scriptures, this is confirmed by great  peace of mind ( Isaiah 54:13) . The Scriptures were written by imperfect persons inspired by the Holy Spirit  thus we should expect traces of man's imperfection in the narration of events but the truth remains the same and visible to the discerning minds . The mystery is being able to see truth through man's imperfections . The major task of the Bible student is to explain how Jesus Christ is 100% God and 100% man . To the immature believer this is a hard task " ...Concerning this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull and sluggish in [your spiritual] hearing and disinclined to listen .Hebrews 5: 1-11 AMP Bible . Pray for zeal to study God's word .

Prayer: Heavenly father , forgive me of my sins , I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as Lord and saviour and receive the Holy Ghost and power for extraordinary wisdom in Jesus name.
