LOVE AND MERCY IS A SHEILD AGAINST FAILURE IN RELATIONSHIPS

By Rev.Michael Benson Ajayi
“Love shall cover the multitude of sins” 1Peter4:8
To love means to be compassionate.  True love is only seen when an offense is perpetrated: Love is a force from God that is exhibited when we show compassion for each other.   It is the very nature of God and the strongest force in the universe.  Without love the human race would be extinct.  However, the love of God is what preserves us through His mercy.

The sufferings in the world are as a result of man rejecting God’s plans for humanity.  We easily rebel against anything that is holy and godly and easily embrace evil.  The result of this attitude is everywhere for all to see; heart breaks, diseases, death, destruction, sadness etc.

Our actions towards God deserves our total annihilation, for the soul that sins shall die, but God’s love for humanity constraints Him from executing maximum punishment on us. God is merciful to us: “The Lord is longsuffering and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression” Numbers 14:18.  The writer of the book of Psalms declares “the Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy “Psalm 103:8

He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.  For as high as the heavens are above the earth,  So great is his love for those who fear him; Psalm 103:10-11.  “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed for his compassion never fail.  They are new every morning great is your faithfulness” Lamentation 3:22-23.

We should always pray for the mercy of God to control our hearts and invariably influence the decisions we make towards each other. It is easier to revenge when offended.  We always seek for justice and retribution whenever we are offended.  But on the contrary God loves mercy more than “justice” and retribution.  “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgive the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance?  You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy”. Micah 7:18.

Jesus was accused of being too ‘sinner friendly’ by the religious Lords of his time, and his reply to their accusations was, “I desire mercy and not sacrifice” Mathew 9:13. Haven unjustly lost an election it really hurts and it is easier to sacrifice the life of your opponent by sending hired assassins to him/her but God would prefer you had mercy.  Husband please have mercy on your wives, getting a new wife would not prevent you from being hurt again, because to er is human, the new wife may have here peculiar problems too.  Evil is not destroyed through vengeance, but rather through mercy and truth (the applied word of God) “By mercy and truth iniquity is purged”  Proverbs 16:6. And “Where sin abounds, grace did much more abound.”  Romans 5:20.

God often refrains from justly punishing us and would want us to do likewise.  When the Israelites offended him in the desert his plan of destroying them was replaced with a plan of salvation.  “Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.  Exodus 32:14. And “he will not always accuse, nor will he habour his anger forever, he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.  “Psalm 103:9-10.

God mercifully forgives our sins; he knows we are no match for him “you will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depth of the sea” Micah 7:19 “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” Heb. 8 12; sometimes as Christians we could be pushed to the wall as men tend to see the average Christian as a weakling.  We are most vulnerable to deceit, abuse.  However, in a bid to overcome certain challenges our weakness take the better part of us and we fall short of God’s commandments for living.

Whenever the enemy desires to afflict us the mercy of God rises up to our rescue; because God is especially merciful to those who love and fear him; “As a father has compassion on his children so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;” Psalm 103: 13, The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him “Psalm
103:17.
Receive  grace for overflowing love and victory in Jesus name.
