HOW TO PRAY EFFECTIVELY
By Rev.Michael Benson Ajayi
1 Tim 2:1-2 KJV “I exhort therefore, that, first of all,
supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all
men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and
peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”
Prayer is the communication
between God and spirits. It exist in the following forms : (1) supplication(Greek: deomai ) which means to beg (as binding oneself), when making a
supplication on behalf of a person ,you present yourself as part of the guilty
party while using the pronoun ‘we’ and
‘us’.(2) prayer (Greek: proseuche)
which means to worship in the spirit while speaking in tongues(3) intersession
(Greek:enteuxis) which means an
interview while making supplication on behalf of a guilty party :in this case
prayers are made on behalf of a person
other than oneself (4) Giving of
thanks (Greek: eucharistia) which means gratitude while actively using a
grateful language to God as an act of worship.
The result of prayer is a peaceful,
godly and honest life. These are the qualities of a prayerful Christian and it
leads to promotion in life. The early disciples saw these qualities in Jesus
and requested that He taught them how to be prayerful. This gave birth to what
is popularly known as the Lord’s Prayer which is a template or formula on how
to pray. The scriptures gives this formula as follows in Matt 6:9-13 Mssg Bible”
With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this: Our
Father in heaven, Reveal who you are.
Set the world right; Do what's best — as above, so below. Keep us alive
with three square meals. Keep us
forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil. You're in charge! You can do
anything you want! You're ablaze in beauty! Yes. Yes. Yes.” He also emphasized the fact that we have a
role to play in bringing about answers to prayers, Matt 6:14-15 says "In
prayer there is a connection between what God does and what you do. You can't
get forgiveness from God, for instance, without also forgiving others. 15 If
you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from God's part. “We reap what
we sow, therefore, sow what you desire
to harvest. (1Jn3:22,Jn15:7)humbly acknowledge His mercy while doing your best
to obey his commandments (Lk18:10-14)
From the
above model ,prayers should be made directly to the Father :no go- between is
needed (Jn14:13,14, Jn16:23) and we should be specific about our
requests(1Kings 3:5,9,10,Matt.21:22,Phi 4:6)the angels only respond to specific
prayers , therefore , no request means no answer(Jam4:2b). modern theology
which says God already knows what’s on our minds ,therefore there isn’t any
need to ask is contrary to scriptures and leads to laziness in prayer and
spiritual paralysis (Dan.9:13,Isaiah
64:7,Lk18:1). This gives Satan the advantage in the church and it’s the reason
for crisis in most Christian homes (Isaiah 56:10-12). I decree and declare a
revival in your prayer life now in Jesus name.
Prayer is a
two-way communication therefore; we should wait for answers which may come
instantaneously through the voice of the Spirit impressed on our hearts, vision
or trance, dream, the bible or a messenger. Therefore, listening to God is part
of praying (1 Sam.3:9, 10, Num 9:8)meditating on God’s word facilitates the
hearing process (Josh1:8, Psa1:2) as all prayer must be made in faith which
comes from God’s word (Matt21:21-22, Mk11:24). Haven prayed ,believe in your
ability to receive and in God’s trustworthiness. I join my faith with yours to
believe God for a breakthrough in Jesus name.
