THE DANGER IN SELF-CONFIDENCE

Rev.Michael Benson Ajayi
Jeremiah 9:23" Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise  man glory in his  wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich  man glory in his riches: "
The challenges of everyday living reveals the inequalities in society and is behind the insecurity problems the world over. In a bid to acquire some degree of comfort and safety many have built their security within the perimeter of their finances,  academic achievements and social class. Unfortunately, none of the above can truly guarantee one's safety in today's world.
The second coming of Jesus Christ shall be heralded by a heightened security problem on a global scale because of the increase in wickedness in the heart of men as a result of demonic activities.  The scriptures says Matthew 24:12" And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. " it is against this backdrop that self- dependence exposes one to the dangers of society. One cannot be careful enough in guaranteeing one's personal security let alone that of our loved ones. Most  nations spend  more of their budgetary allocations on security with many becoming impoverished because resources that would have hitherto been used for development is being spent on security.  This is the result of neglecting God ,some nations have out-rightly proscribed the use of the Holy scriptures as an instrument for social reforms.
The scriptures says in Psalm 52: 5-7 "God shall likewise  destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of  thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.   The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him:   Lo,   this is the man  that made not God his strength; but trusted in the  abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness. " therefore, self -confidence is an invitation to anarchy and self-destruction if not curtailed. The scriptures says in Psalm 118:8-9 "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put  confidence in man.  It is better to trust in the Lord than to put  confidence in princes." no matter how influential one may be, it is important to know that no matter how strong a man or woman may be, we are all prone to dying . Once an influential personality passes on ,there ends whatever benefits that were accrual through our relationship with such a person. They could also be terminally ill or be jailed, bankrupt  therefore it is an investment in uncertainty to put ones trust in another man .
As we grow in grace and knowledge, we may experience an increase in riches and  become the cynosure of all eyes and there is the tendency and temptation  to enjoy the praises from our dependants,  the scriptures says in Proverbs 14:20 "The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich hath many friends." riches are like  sugar before ants. It is the will of God for us to be rich materially for the purpose of the spread of the gospel and to help the poor(.2Cor.9:7-9,3Jn1:2) the scriptures says in Proverbs 10: 22 "The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it." But God doesn't want us putting our trust in money. It is possible to be very rich and yet be dedicated to God's service. Abraham was very rich( Gen.13:2 ) and yet he was a committed husband, father, businessman and prophet of God. He did not loose sight of the fact that God was his everything.
We are admonished not to build our security around riches, the richer one gets the more vulnerable we are to insecurities, the scriptures says in Psalm 62:10 "Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them." also in (Jeremiah 9:23-24 ) if we are to boast,  it should be in the fact that we are loved by God and have a relationship with Him through Jesus.
The very moment a person begins to develop self confidence instead of faith in God , she becomes reprobate and begins to live in error. This is the effect of the deceitfulness of riches (Mark 4:19) , that fellow becomes arrogant and presumptuous, the children of Israel for a moment thought they could do without their leader Joshua , they had arrived the promise land and were beginning to enjoy some comfort .They rebelled against their leader  and  embarked on an adventure without seeking God’s  consent  and were humiliated by a smaller opposition (Num14:41-45) . Similarly, Uziah was made king of Judah  at age sixteen,he also had the backing of the most formidable armed forces in the world , he was a successful engineer and inventor and was richer than any king in his time. He soon forgot his humble beginning and developed self -confidence and took over the role of the priesthood, he thought he was too smart to be under a pastor and was struck with leprosy, he was a victim of self-confidence (2Chron.26:16-20)self-confidence could lead to one being afflicted by a devastating disease. We loose our immunity as result of self-confidence, Psalm 31:10 says "My strength faileth because of mine iniquity." It leads to defeat before our enemies (Lev.26:27,36,37,Joshua,7:12,Judgesz2:13-15) . Whenever the lord discovers self-confidence in a person, He will deliberately allow them fail (Lev.26:18-20,2Chron.16:7) . As you read this, receive freedom from the bondage of self-confidence and a reversal of every disaster targeted towards you in Jesus name.
