BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL
By Rev. Michael Benson Ajayi.
Matt 5:7 NKJV “ Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain
mercy.
The word ‘blessed’ is a Greek word which means to be happy, envied, and
spiritually prosperous — with life-joy
and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of one’s outward conditions. It is a state
of being well spoken of by God and man .
God’s love unconditional but salvation vis a viz the
process of appropriation of the provisions of this great salvation is
conditional. For example, the scriptures say in Romans 1:17 that ‘the Just shall live by faith’ and that with God all things are
possible (Matt19:26) ; this presupposes that access to unlimited resource and
boundless opportunities are consequent upon a person working in harmony with
God. Faith in God is a must to receive anything from Him and faith is: harmony
in divine purpose. Every failure recorded in scripture in the life of God’s people was never attributed to
anyone else but their lack of faith which expresses itself through love (Ga
5:6) .
God is love and full of mercy. The
word of God is the word of mercy, and the scripture teaches that the ‘sower’ sows the word (Mk.4:14) of mercy. What this means is
that mercy is a type of seed which when sown yields a harvest of mercy that
guarantees a life full of joy. Mercy overlooks shortcomings. In life, we
struggle with human imperfection and this is characterized by not being able to
always meet up with one’s obligations.
The harvest of mercy puts us in a position where these shortfalls are
overlooked, thus giving us a headway in life. For every time we sow the seed of
mercy into a person’s life, there are
at least thirty persons assigned to show us kindness. It is this kindness that
sustains our marriages, businesses, relationships, jobs, homes etc.
By virtue of past disappointments from trusted
persons we sometimes resort to tow the path of an ‘eye for an eye’ in line with the Old Testament as a
result seeds of vengeance are sown leading to more heartbreaks. We are under
the New Testament and under this dispensation, mercy is exalted victoriously
over judgment (James 2:13). Enemies are made to be at peace with us when we sow
seeds of mercy Prov 16:7 KJV “When a man's ways please the Lord, he maketh even his
enemies to be at peace with him.” But unfortunately, what is taught by religious entrepreneurs
is that which portrays every person we know as a potential witch or wizard,
more time is dedicated to preachings on witchcraft than on the ministry of
reconciliation that we are called into (2Cor 5:18-19 ) as a result their
followers live in perpetual slavery to the fear of man .These witchcraft
oriented doctrines is not of God ( Matt 5:43-48) . Perfect love removes fear and
makes us immune to witchcraft (luke10,19).
The scriptures says God prefers mercy
to judgment, James 2:13 AMP “For to him who has shown no mercy the judgment [will
be] merciless, but mercy [full of glad confidence] exults victoriously over
judgment” most
religions of the world preach judgmental-ism but Jesus said Matt 9:13 KJV “..I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not
come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” What this means is that, being
vindictive in a relationship does not bring about positive change; it is the
mercy shown to a weak or repentant party that leads to love in a relationship. We
love God because He is trustworthy, forgives us our sins and overlooks our
weaknesses.
The word of God is truth (John17:17)
and it is when the word in spoken in mercy that the power for divine favour is
manifested in our lives (Mark11:25). Mercy activates goodwill from men. The
scriptures says Prov 3:3-4 NKJV “Let not mercy and truth forsake you;
Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, And so find
favour and high esteem In the sight of God and man.” Walking in mercy leads to goodwill
before God and a high esteem beyond what money can buy. As you read this
receive a crown of high esteem in Jesus name.
