THE PATH TO DIVINE PROMOTION

By Rev. Michael Benson Ajayi

Matthew 18:4 "Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven."

MATTHEW 18:1-5; MARK 9:30-37; LUKE 9:46-48
Jesus used a little child to illustrate humility. Babies have a purity and humility that is many times missing in adults, they certainly are not selfless. A child comes into the world totally self-centered, desiring what he wants whenever and wherever he wants it. It is the parents duty to train children out of this selfishness to avert its consequence in their adulthood.
One of humility's dominant characteristics is a God-dependency and not a self-sufficiency. The truth of humility being the key  to greatness or success was not new  to the disciples however Jesus gave it a new meaning through His selfless disposition .
This path of self-denial to greatness is exactly opposite to the world's path of exalting self at other's expense. The path of humility could not possibly be feasible if it wasn't part of God's demand for service and worship. We would simply be trampled underfoot if there was no humility in the world.
Humility is a step of faith - faith that acknowledges God as the judge of the universe and that promotion comes from Him (Ps. 75:6-7) through faith. God will
resist the proud but gives grace (promotion by divine influence) to the humble (1 Pet. 5:5).
Humility is trusting in God and not in ourselves. This is why it is easy to be humble when we've failed, and conversely, hard to be humble when we've achieved great success.
Novices in christian leadership easily fall prey to pride that's why there's an upsurge in scandals among the clergy . As a christian leader , you are expected to be accountable to a more experienced and older minister  , through whom you'll learn ministerial ethics which will eventually rub off on the congregation. The disorderliness in society is partly a by-product of the lack of humility among church leaders; an unfortunate affect of unhealthy church growth principles that places emphasis in quantity and not quality, that's why despite the explosion in the growth of churches, crime rate is on the increase in society with churches becoming a hiding place for criminals. This is contrary to God's plan (1 Cor.5:1-13) : it is for this reason that the bible warns against putting novices into positions of leadership in the church.
Pride is self-sufficiency and self- exaltation while humility is self-denial and dependence upon God.Receive grace for promotion as you humble yourself under
the power of God in Jesus name.
