DEALING WITH THE ROOT OF BITTER STRIFE

By Rev. Michael Benson Ajayi

" While they were at Hazeroth, Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses because he had married a Cushite woman. They said, “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses? Hasn’t he spoken through us, too?” But the Lord heard them. (Now Moses was very humble—more humble than any other person on earth.)Numbers 12:1‭-‬3 NLTBible

"One day Korah son of Izhar, a descendant of Kohath son of Levi, conspired with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, from the tribe of Reuben. They incited a rebellion against Moses, along with 250 other leaders of the community, all prominent members of the assembly. They united against Moses and Aaron and said, “You have gone too far! The whole community of Israel has been set apart by the Lord , and he is with all of us. What right do you have to act as though you are greater than the rest of the Lord ’s people?”Numbers 16:1‭-‬3 NLTBible

Moses was chosen of God to lead his people from Egypt to the promised land . He was assisted by brother Aaron and sister Miriam. They watched Moses grow from a baby to being the leader of the most powerful nation Israel . Therefore, it was not strange when they began to openly confront Moses in bitter arguments . They teamed up against Moses accusing him of marrying an African ( Cushite) . Africans were looked down upon by the then Jews as an inferior race. God did not disapprove of Moses' choice of a wife neither was her presence in his life a     hindrance to the anointing of God's favour and the deliverance of the Jews - Miriam and Aaron inclusive . God created mankind and no race is superior .He loves us equally and has no favorites ( Colossians 3:25) .

The real cause for the disagreement with Moses was that they were evidently envious of Moses' leadership. True motives are often shrouded under emotional outbursts . Parents should be able to see beyond the smoke screen during family disputes . Envy is part of the lower human nature with catastrophic effects on families like in Numbers 16:1-50 and Numbers 12 .

The scriptures says "The Lord was very angry with them, and he departed."

Numbers 12:9 NLTBible. God is omnipresent, he does not move from place to place. He is everywhere at all times. Therefore , what verse 9 means is that Miriam fell out of God's favour. The same thing could be said of Korah ,the Bible says God said to Moses  “Get away from all these people so that I may instantly destroy them!”Numbers 16:21 NLTBible .

Biter disagreements results in the destruction of families , businesses , relationships and communities . God removes his protective shield from trouble makers . In the new testament scripture of Acts 5 Ananias and Sapphira suffered the consequences of an unhealthy argument against the Holy Ghost in their disagreement with apostle Peter .

Whenever we are called to settle disputes we should make sure we listen to all parties involved and try to determine the root cause of the disagreement and always remember that behind a simple argument may lie an undisclosed matter that may be unrelated to the issue at stake. We should trust the Holy Spirit in prayers to reveal it to us and be impartial in our judgments. Blessed are the peacemakers .

Prayer
Heavenly father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as Lord and saviour and receive the Holy Ghost and power to be a peacemaker
