WHO IS THE FATHER OF THE MESSIAH ?

 Rev. Michael Benson Ajayi
  The Messiah in the Qur’an
The word ‘masih’ is found 11 times in the Qur’an and often it is connected with the name ‘Isa' (or the Muslim Jesus), the son of Maryam, and the statement, ‘he was only a messenger.’ For example ,  "… his name is al-Masīḥ, ʿĪsā, son of Maryam” (Q. 3:45) Al-Masīḥ,

...ʿĪsā, son of Maryam, was only a messenger of Allāh… (Q. 4:171). Q. 3:45. The Asad version reads,  “…shall become known as the Christ Jesus, son of Mary…” while the Ali version reads. “… his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary…”

In 2001, Ibn Bāz, the former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia issued a religious decree or a fatwa as a response to the question, “Why is

Isa, the son of Maryam, called al-Masih? While speaking on the Messiah's external features he concluded that : “the benefit of knowing” about this person called Messiah for Muslims “is minimal.”

There is nothing minimal in the quest for truth and salvation , it is for this reason that the Qur'an admonishes  Muslims to study the Bible as revelation from God  "Lo! We did reveal the Torah, wherein is guidance and a light" (Sura 5:44).
"And We caused Jesus, son of Mary, to follow in their footsteps, confirming that which was (revealed) before him in the Torah, and We bestowed on him the Gospel wherein is guidance and a light, confirming that which was (revealed) before it in the Torah - a guidance and an admonition unto those who ward off (evil)" (Sura 5:46).
The Christian perspective of the Messiah places emphasis on his purpose . The need for a vicarious atonement for the emancipation of humanity from the power of sin necessitates a Messiah. He must be free from sin given that a  sinner cannot atone for a sinner or else his sacrifice would be unclean :an abomination to  a Holy God. The sacrifice must satisfy the demands of the laws of Moses which requires blood  for remission of sins and reconciliation (Leviticus 8:15) of man back to God.
It must also satisfy the conditions by which the promise to prophet Abraham would be fulfilled . God promised Abraham a global family by faith consisting of Jews and gentiles ( Genesis 18:18) .

Islamic commentators allude to Qur'an 3:45 describing  Jesus Christ as  touched by God and without sin. (Al-Tabari) Anointed (Qurturbi ) Anointed healer (Al-Razi) (https://network.crcna.org/ecumenical-interfaith/ who-messiah-islam)

Jesus Christ asked the religiously Jews of his time Mark 12:35-37  "And Jesus answered and said,  while he taught in the temple, How say the  scribes that Christ is the Son of David? For  David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The Lord  said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I  make thine enemies thy footstool. David  therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence  is he then his son? ("Psalm110:1)

And in John 5:18 'Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him (Jesus), because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.'
Jesus Christ healed on the Sabbath day (Matthew 12:12-13) to prove his supremacy over the laws of Moses (Mark2;28) and forgave sins : something only God can do (Luke 5:20, Luke7:48) to prove his divinity .

Prayer: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as Lord and saviour and receive power  for healing .Amen.
