HOW TO STRENGTHEN THE BONDS OF UNITY.

By Rev. Michael Benson Ajayi

" May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." Romans 15:5‭-‬6 NLTBible

Disunity occurs when we allow the pursuit of our individual interest override a common goal. We should be driven by a desire to fulfill a divine purpose . Fulfilment in life comes from the pursuit of a vision that is larger than life . You were created to do more than you imagine you can do and through the word of God we know we cannot accomplish this with or without human assistance .

It is against this backdrop that the spirit of unity is needed to help  us actualize our purpose in life . The Bible says "Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace."Ephesians 4:3 NLTBible We have a role to play in the maintenance of peace and unity in our families , community and country.

You should be agreeable and like minced  while seeking for unity. It is easy to be agreeable when we avoid 'the class mentality ' nobody should be considered as being below 'our class' and therefore not worth talking or listening  to , the Bible says " Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!" Romans 12:16 NLTBible  and  " Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose." Philippians 2:2 NLTBible

Learn to get along with disadvantaged persons ,take them were they are, the scriptures says " Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong." Romans 14:1 NLTBible . Avoid offending people because " An offended friend is harder to win back than a fortified city. Arguments separate friends like a gate locked with bars." Proverbs 18:19 NLTBible

Be courteous, kind  and gentle to others ".. all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude." 1 Peter 3:8 NLTBible (also see Eph4:32, 2Tim2:24) We should be careful about what we say about others and avoid foolish questions (2Tim2:23, Ti3:2)

Depend on the Holy Spirit to control your temper and be slow to speak especially when upset .The Bible says "A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare." Proverbs 15:1 NLTBible also  " Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry."James 1:19 NLT ( Prov15:1, Prov25:8)

Value living in peace above your personal interest ( Rom14:19-21, Rom 12:18) by avoiding being partial  or playing favorites ( James 2:1, 1 Tim5:21) and sharing unselfishly with others (Acts4:32)

Respect should be accorded to elders in any disagreement "Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. Talk to younger men as you would to your own brothers."1 Timothy 5:1 NLTBible  it is important to reconcile with an aggrieved family member to avoid hindrances to prayers being answered (Matt.5:23-24)

Prayer: Heavenly father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Ghost and power to forgive and live in harmony in Jesus name.
